The first day, 10-29 I only worked one hour sanding,
Day 2 was dedicated to 4 hours of sanding and looking for flaws. I
worked on the nose and tail first then the Jeffrey Dale logo and finally
the rails. You can compare the original pictures to these logo pictures
and see where the sun browned the logo area. The points on the original
laminates were under the pigment but they were still a little brown. The
rails are really nice and you can see the overlap in the glass job. The
tail block is a really cool blue fiberglass solid block and in great
condition. A lot of the board still has good gloss resin under the
pigment coat, making it a little easier to get the coating off. The
glass job is pretty fresh and the resin still has a crisp green tint to
it, probably because it was covered with sun protection for about 30 +
years.
Using a dual action orbital sander and #60 grit discs I am trying to
keep the sanding action on the pigment because it is so hard. First you
sand through the waxy coating on the outside and then slowly through the
color itself being cautious not to take off too much of the original
gloss coat and sanding coat. It has taken 5 hours and about 6 discs
to get this far.
There is the one 2 inch ding on the left side of the
nose and two other minor dings on the nose. I'll probably use caviseal
on those. I might take the fin off also. I can't tell yet if it was
moved back or cut down. It is a nice solid fiberglass fin and looks to
be the same as the tail block. Other than minor dents and a few little
pukas there isn't any other damage I can see.
